During winter months, trees go into a dormant stage. This is beneficial because disease
and pests are not prevalant during this time period.
Pruning trees during the winter is the best
time, because you can see the structure without any leaves. Cleaning should include removal of dead,
dying, diseased, crowded or weak branches. Pruning also stimulates faster growth on trees for the following
growing season.
Winter has its disadvantages for trees. Mechanical destruction by snowplowing
and salt is one problem. Another problem that occurs is freezing of the soil under the tree. This can
lead to drying out of the tree. To avoid this problem, thoroughly water trees in the fall, before the
soil freezes.
Remember, spring will eventually be here, so protect your trees, especially younger
ones, during the winter.
