As fall approaches, most homeowners think about planting. Traditionally fall is a good
time to plant small trees or shrubs, however, it's also a great time to 'unplant' things. For instance,
untie all guy wires that were installed to hold up small trees. Make sure you unstake any trees or shrubs,
because their growths habits are vigorous enough to support themselves. Also, be sure to unmulch your
trees. Too much mulch piled up around the tree leads to bark decay, disease or insect problems. Besides
this, small critters look for places, like piles of mulch, to make their homes for the winter. Once established,
they can literally chew up everything in sight.
With high winds and heavy rainfalls, that occur
during fall months, weak tree overhangs are susceptable to breakage. Many homeowners have huge branch
overhangs. These overhangs can cause serious damage to the structure of your home, not to mention the
risk of knocking down power lines. Carefully remove these large overhangs, so your trees remain healthy
and safe for the coming years.
